Therapy With a Gay Therapist in Los Angeles

Starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions — especially when you're looking for support that truly understands the unique emotional, relational, and cultural experiences of being a gay man. Below are answers to common questions about working together.

- Logistics -

1. WHAT ARE YOUR FEES?

My rate for a standard 50-minute session is $300. This applies to both individual and couples sessions. I do not increase my rates for ancillary series such as EMDR and KAP.

2. DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?

No. I am not an in-network provider with any insurance company. However, if you have a PPO policy there is a strong chance you can utilize your "out of network" benefits to receive a significant reimbursement. I will provide you with a receipt, known as a "superbill", that you can submit to your insurance provider following your sessions.

3. HOW DOES THEREAPY WORK? HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

First, we'll start with what you're dealing with now. What symptoms you're struggling with, and what pain you're eperiencing. My goal is to help you find relief. As the conversation progresses we will organically find additional areas that need exploration. For some this may take a few months, and for others it may take a few years. My goal is to ensure that these changes are not a one-time thing or simply a "quick fix". We want to take the time to ensure pivitol life changes stick. We will leave no stone unturned so you leave therapy feeling fully confident moving forward in your life.

4. WHAT IF I NEED OTHER RESOURCES?

My goal is to support you in all areas of healing and wellbeing. I have a strong network of clinicians I trust that I often refer clients to for services such as medical care, psychiatry, massage, chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture, and other important treatments. I love collaborating with other clinicians to ensure we can deliver the best care possible.

5. HOW FREQUENTLY WILL I ATTEND THERAPY?

As a general rule, you should plan to attend therapy weekly. Oftentimes clients will come in twice a week - particularly when doing trauma therapy. Occasionally some folks will choose to meet every other week. Most importantly, we will carefully track your progress to determine which session cadence is best for you.

6. WHERE WILL WE MEET?

I see clients in person at my West Hollywood office. If you are located outside Los Angeles, we will meet remotely using a HIPPA-compliant video platform. I am a licensed Telehealth provider throughout both California and Florida.

7. WHAT THERAPEUTIC MODALITIES WILL WE USE?

I primarily use psychodynamic, CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), DBT (dialectal behavioral therapy), IFS (internal family systems), attachment-theory & mindfulness therapies.

8. WHAT TYPES OF ISSUES DO YOU HELP CLIENTS WITH?

I work primarily with gay men and LGBTQ+ adults navigating:

  • Dating and relationship patterns

  • Attachment wounds and intimacy issues

  • Anxiety, shame, and trauma

  • Identity, self-worth, and emotional regulation

  • Sexual boundaries and relationship dynamics

If you’re feeling stuck in repeating patterns, therapy can help uncover why—and how to change them.

9. DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN WORKING WITH GAY MEN?

Yes. Working with gay men is a central focus of my practice—not a side specialty. I understand how early experiences like stigma, secrecy, rejection, and family dynamics shape adult relationships, sexuality, and self-esteem. Therapy with me is culturally informed, direct, and affirming.

10. DO I NEED TO BE "OUT" TO WORK WITH YOU?

Not at all. Clients come to therapy at all stages of identity exploration. Whether you’re fully out, questioning, or navigating complex family or cultural dynamics, therapy is a space where you don’t need to perform or explain yourself.

11. CAN THERAPY HELP WITH DATING AND RELATIONSHIPS?

Yes. Many of the gay men I work with come to therapy because dating feels frustrating, confusing, or emotionally draining.

You may be experiencing:

  • Repeating relationship patterns

  • Difficulty finding secure partners

  • Burnout from hookup culture

  • Anxiety around open relationships

Therapy helps uncover the deeper emotional patterns that shape how you connect.

12. WHY WORK WITH A GAY THERAPIST?

13. DO I NEED THERAPY OR COACHING?

Working with someone who understands minority stress, identity development & relational dynamics in gay culture can accelerate trust and insight. You don’t need to explain the context — we can focus on the work.

  • Therapy focuses on emotional healing and deeper psychological patterns.

  • Coaching focuses on present-day growth and forward movement.

Both can support: dating confidence, relational clarity & self-worth. Learn more on my Coaching for Gay Men page

14. WHAT IF I'M NOT IN A CRISIS?

You don't have to wait for a crisis. Many clients seek therapy because: something feels “off," they feel stuck or they want more fulfilling relationships. Therapy can be growth-oriented, not just problem-focused.

15. HOW LONG DOES THERAPY TAKE?

There’s no one-size-fits-all timeline. Some clients work short-term around a specific issue; others engage in longer-term work focused on deeper attachment and relational patterns. We’ll regularly reassess your goals together.
