What Is “Therapy”?

Most of us have only a vague idea of what therapy really is. The truth is, therapy can look dramatically different depending on the therapist. But at its core, therapy is the process of exploring your inner world. It’s less about changing your external circumstances and more about shifting your perception of them

Therapy is based on the belief that human beings have an innate drive toward emotional health. My role is to help you reconnect with that drive — to uncover the parts of you that want to grow, heal, and move forward.

 

What Is a Therapist?

Anyone can offer advice — but therapy is something deeper. In my experience, people come to therapy when they’re struggling with something they haven’t been able to resolve on their own: anxiety, depression, addiction, relational patterns, or a sense of being stuck.

A therapist is someone with clinical training who can help you gain insight and build emotional mastery. We’re not here to give you instructions or quick fixes. Our job is to create a space where you can develop the clarity, awareness, and skills needed to lead a more intentional and fulfilling life.

Your therapy should be distinctively yours.

No two people are the same. So my goal is to utilize specific therapeutic tools uniquely tailored to your needs. My method synthesizes the best of several therapeutic approaches including EMDR, cognitive behavioral therapy, internal family systems and attachment theory. Throughout the therapeutic process, I engage my clients in an ongoing dialog about their experience of the therapy. I directly ask them to describe what they enjoy, what they dislike, and how we can continue collaborating to make the treatment as effective as possible.

Choosing a therapist is a very personal task. We can start with a 15 minute consultation call. These calls are free of charge and will hopefully provide us an opportunity to get to know one another. I can give you a sense of how I work, but more importantly, you can see if I’m the right fit for you. Then we can craft a strategic plan to help you achieve your goals.

What if I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t help?

That’s more common than you’d think — and it doesn’t mean therapy can’t work for you. Sometimes it just takes finding the right person and approach. I invite you to bring that experience into our first conversation so we can talk about what didn’t work, and what might feel different this time.

 

How do I know if we’re a good fit?

Great therapy starts with a strong connection. That’s why I offer a free 15-minute consultation call. It’s a chance for us to meet, talk about what you’re looking for, and see if my style feels like the right match for your needs.

 

Will you tell me what to do, or just listen?

A bit of both. I’ll listen carefully and help you understand what’s going on beneath the surface — but I’ll also offer clear reflections, tools, and guidance. My goal is for you to walk away from each session feeling more grounded, not more confused.

 

How long does therapy usually take?

That really depends on your goals. Some people work through a specific issue in a few months; others choose to go deeper over a longer period. I’ll help you set clear goals early on so we can track your progress together.

 

What if I don’t know where to start?

You’re not alone in that. Many people come in knowing something feels “off” but not knowing why. Part of my job is to help you untangle what’s going on and create a clear, workable path forward.
