Anyone can give advice. In my experience, clients come to therapy looking for something they cannot get anywhere else. Working with individuals means developing a real relationship. It’s critical because we heal wounds through relationships—not in isolation. What therapists do is respond correctively, in a way that resolves, rather than repeats, the client’s original trauma.
I believe change happens in two ways: first when clients are able to develop a cognitive understanding of their presenting problems, and finally, when they are able to shift their emotional responses to be more effective.
Throughout the therapeutic process, I engage my clients in an ongoing dialog about their experience of the therapy. I directly ask them to describe what they enjoy, what they dislike, and how we can continue collaborating to make the treatment as effective as possible.
